Ellen “FaithSide” Yang

October 15, 2012 Leave a comment

I have met many people from the MLG events I attended throughout the years. Some of them are now close friends of mine who I talk to on a normal basis. Ellen is one of the friends. She has really touched my life in a positive way and I can never thank her enough. Not only is she a great friend but she’s an amazing role model. She is always in a good mood and very supportive. So lets get right into this awesome interview and get to know Ellen!

Me: Where did the gamertag FaithSide come from? Is there any special meaning behind it?
Ellen: Like any gamer, you go through so many different alias until you find the one that suits you best and that was “Faith”. It originated from my mother, she always taught my brothers and sisters to be faithful and loyal to those who love and care about you. It’s something I hold highly because these morals have been with me since I could remember.

The “Side” part obviously came from none other than Michael’s tag “StrongSide” so we wanted to have matching names…haha plus it fit very well with the Faith so it was a no brainer!

Me: I think it’s awesome you got “Faith” and your morals from your mom. I know she’s proud of you and it only makes sense for you and Mike to have the matching gamertags 😉

Over the years you have been to many gaming events. Which one is your favorite and why?

Ellen: I have so many favorite events but my absolute favorite event was when Michael was on Warriors, Columbus 2011 with Snakebite, Robbie B and ElamiteWarrior. I had so much fun at the event I can’t help but say it’s been one of the best ones. That was when I experienced the most…heart stopping Halo since I’ve been with Michael. Warriors beat Final Boss in game 5 TS Zealot: 50-49 and moved up in the bracket. I was on the edge of my seat the entire series, I kept holding my breath because I was freaking out so bad! haha

Me: I was working while that going on. I can’t believe I missed that epic game! I have to ask the big question, when did you start playing video games? How do you feel it has changed over the years?

Ellen: I started playing video games at a very young age. I remember getting ready for Middle School when my brothers and their friends would skip school and stay home to play video games. Before I left for the bus I played my brother, Jim in a fighter game called Rival Schools and beat him. He was so upset his younger sister just beat him in front of his friends that he told me to miss the bus and he would drop me off after we played again..haha. I didn’t stay, I left because I was happy to beat my older brother. As much as he doesn’t want to admit it, we’ve been in a brother and sister rivalry since then. My brothers and their friends LAN’ed Halo 1 when it first came out. At that point in time, I wasn’t very familiar with FPS’s so I didn’t play with them. Once I picked up the controller and decided to play the campaign, I didn’t put it down. I got better and better as time went on and started playing with my brothers at their LAN’s. Halo 2 came out not too long after I was unstoppable! My brother Jim would get so mad he always wanted to play me 1v1 just to prove he was better than me! Keep in mind we had no idea what MLG was so we played with default everything. Good times. Now I don’t play video games anymore. I hardly have time for them with going to school and working full time. I have a very busy schedule to where I don’t even consider myself a “girl gamer” anymore because I don’t keep up with my halo skills anymore. When I get a sick kill, I freak out like it’s something so foreign to me…haha.

Me: Ha ha. You get pretty serious when we ran the MLG playlist 😉 You were always carrying us.

It’s no secret you’re dating one of the best professional gamers of all time, StrongSide. How did you and Mike meet?

Ellen: EHarmony.

Haha I’m just kidding! We met at MLG Anaheim 2009. It was Sunday night at a hotel party and like how Michael is he came over and started talking to me. There’s something about him that draws people and I love that quality about him. He’s such an amazing guy, I couldn’t image how my life would be without him. My little secret though…I had a HUGE crush on him back in 2006/2007…I just never told anyone! haha I didn’t want to be labeled as “That Girl who’s crushing on StrongSide” all those years before we met, there was a secret crush I kept to myself so when he finally talked to me at Anaheim, I was all for it! haha! Almost three years later we’re still together and building our life together.

Me: Three years and counting. I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for you two! What is it like to be a girlfriend of a professional gamer?

Ellen: Since I played competitive Halo, it made it a lot easier to have that understanding of the game and the demands of it. I support Michael not because I have to, but because I truly want to. I honestly believe he’s the best overall pro out there…I may be a little biased, but you can’t deny he’s got a lot of qualities not very many professionals have. The toughest part was probably dealing with all of the attention you get that comes along with it. I’m a pretty private person when it comes to my life, relationships and personal experiences. I won’t tell you my life’s story when I first meet you, but once you get to know me I’m pretty chill. When I’m at events I’m there for one thing and one thing only, to support Michael no matter what. I’ve actually annoyed some of the other pro players by always cheering and screaming for Michael and his team! haha but I don’t care because tournament weekends are about Michael.

Me: I’m pretty sure that’s how you and I met. I saw you talking to Mike after a match when I walked up. I do have to say you’re a little intimidating at first =P

How stressful do things get when it comes to practice, lans and events as you try and support Mike?

Ellen: I’ve never cared about Michael playing Halo for 10hrs a day because it’s his job. He needs to be at the top of his game to be able to compete with other pro players. The only thing I would ever get upset about is cooking dinner and having him eat it at this gaming station and not on a real dinner table with me…haha. Taking 15mins to have dinner with your loved one doesn’t seem too far fetched right?  haha Michael is better at it now. It is nice to have a real meal and break away for a little bit. LAN’s were tough because that meant he had to leave for a few days so I would be at home by myself. I left my home, Minnesota to be with Michael in Kentucky so when he is gone I don’t have my family to spend my time with but I’ve made many friends since then so it’s not such a issue anymore.

Me: That’s a lot of playing time. It’s good that you two get time to sit down and have dinner. So what are your first impressions of Halo 4?

Ellen: From what I see and hear from Michael, I believe it’ll be an amazing game. I don’t keep up with the Halo scene and community anymore so I never know what’s going on until someone tells me. I loved the pistol in Halo 1 so I’m very excited to see how it works in Halo 4. The BR will be back along with the DMR so it’ll be exciting to see which one will be the choice of weapon for competitive players.

Me: The game looks amazing. I can’t wait to play a few games with you and Mike.If you could create a dream team to play with, who would you pick?

Ellen: Myself and three StrongSide’s…does that count? Haha I’ve to say myself, Michael, Walshy and BananaCognac. Michael and I have this team work that works in mysterious ways..haha. When I think he’s not able to help finish a kill, he does. When you think we’re not working together, we are 😉  I’ll be pushing forward through their courtyard and I get into a fight with someone, he’s right behind me to clean up the kill and I’m thinking….awesome! haha Walshy and Banana are two great friends of ours and I love them like brothers. I wouldn’t pick anyone else even if they won every single event in their lifetime.

Me:Do you have any shout outs or plugs?

Ellen: Michael for always be there for me and loving me.

Dave/Walshy and Brandon/Banana for being great friends to not only Michael but to me as well.

Aaron/Implict for being a true StrongSide fan and being a great friend.

To all of the true StrongSide fans out there who know Michael and I on a different level. We appreciate all of your support and love!

Me: I want to thank Ellen for taking the time out of her day to do this interview! ❤ You better go to MLG Dallas!
